Victor Valentinovich Eremenko
Professor Victor V. Eremenko is the son of Valentin N. Eremenko and Nataly M. Zin, born on 26 August 1932 in Kharkov, Ukraine. He married Lyudmila Abramovna Teverovskaya, with whom he has one child, Yeremenko. He enjoys collecting modern art.
Holder of a Master of Science degree in physics from the State University of Kharkov and a Philosophy Doctorate in physics and mathematics from the Institute of Physics in Kiev, Professor Eremenko began working as an associate researcher at the Institute of Physics in Kiev in 1959. He joined the Institute of Low Temperature Physics in Kharkov in 1961 as a senior researcher, and was promoted to head of the magnetism lab in 1962, a post he still holds. In 1991, he became director of the institute. Additionally, upon completion of a Doctorate of Science in physics and mathematics at the Institute for Low Temperatures in Kharkov, he was hired as a professor by the State University of Kharkov. He is also an academician at the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, co-director of the Kharkov-Link Program at the International Institute of Theoretical and Applied Physics, Iowa State University of UNESCO, and a member of the Ukrainian Physics Society, American Physics Society, New York Academy of Science, and Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. Serving on the editorial boards of Solid State Physics journal and Space Science and Technology, he is editor in chief of the editorial board of Low Temperature Physics.
Having done physical research in the fields of spectroscopy (i.e., Raman, light absorption) and magneto-optics of semiconducting, molecular and magnet crystals, and HTSC, he has authored numerous publications including the books Lectures on Magnetism (1972), Introduction to Optical Spectroscopy of Magnets (1975), and Magneto-Optics and Spectroscopy of Antiferromagnets (1993). Professor Eremenko was honored with the Ukrainian State Prize in 1972, the Ukrainian Academy Prize in 1985, the Azerbajan State Prize in 1986, the Joint Prize of the Polish and Soviet Academies in 1987, and the title of Soros Professor in 1997.” - Citation from Millennium issue of Leading Intellectuals of the World (published by the American Biographical Institute, 1999).


Year 2000 is especially jubileous for Victor V. Eremenko: 50 years of his creative activity, 40 years of his Institute, 25 years of his Journal. That time did not pass in vain.

Milestones of Scientific Activities:
Prof. Victor V. Eremenko stays among the pioneers of solving many the most important problems of solid state physics, optics and spectroscopy of the magnets, material science of the strongly correlated electronic systems.
His main research interests concern with low temperature magnetism: the phase transitions into a magnetically ordered state; far infrared (FIR) and optical spectroscopy: spin waves, the exciton and exciton–magnon processes in antiferromagnets and molecular crystals, Raman and Brillouin scattering, light absorption, luminescence; magneto-optics of semiconducting, molecular, magnetic crystals and HTSC, magneto-transport phenomena in semimetals and semiconductors.

  • His independent student works deal with transport properties and spatial rearrangement of charge carriers in semimetals and semiconductors, as well as with a shift of the long-wave edge in light absorption spectra at cooling. The results attained industrial application in a creation of photosensing units. The further development of these ideas allowed V.Eremenko to establish mutually advantageous collaboration with FED-corporation (Hudson Valley Research Park 1580 Route 52, Hopewell Junction, NY 12533, e-mail: fedcorp@aol.com).
  • The carried out experimental and theoretical study of the energy spectra of nonmetalic compounds, which contain the ions of the transition and rare earth elements with the underfilled shells, in the vicinity of phase transitions into magnetically ordered state, allowed one to describe quantitatively the results of the spectral measurements. Migration of optical excitations in the antiferromagnets was examined in detail. For the first time the concept of incoherent escitons in quasi-one-dimensional magnetically ordered media was created. Raman light scattering by the crystals with two-well potential was studied systematically. In a process of this activity the unique equipment was designed and manufactured: cryogenic FIR and Fourier spectrometers, magnetic resonance techniques for the spectral measurements in a magnetic field, which were afterwards utilized in a development of the quantum generators and radiation sensing units. The latter development acquired special importance after Chernobil catastrophe, and was recognized by Schmid Co (France). The proposed technique of the energy zone investigation extended the set of the objects to the semiconductors with the high effective masses of charge carriers.
  • Magnetooptical research of the magnetically ordered states demonstrated objectively the kinetics of the orientational phase transition in the media with high magnetic anisotropy, as garnets and orthoferrites. Their relationship with the structural transitions was revealed. These achievements facilitated a creation of the most meritorious experimental and technological base for a direct express control of the material properies important for hard drive applications. In a result magnetic lamination of magnets during first order phase transitions was discovered (“intermediate” and “mixed” state); new magnetooptic effects were found, delocalization of the impurity states in antiferromagnets (“magnetic impuritons”) were investigated. The results for antiferromagnets and ferrimagnets found wide application in the studies of spatially inhomogeneous magnetic media. A set of original cryogenic units was created. The developed ideas are widely used in design of the cryostats, intended for the cryogenic measurements in a probe radiation, particularly in the space research programs.
  • During the past decade the accumulated experience was used for the detailed analysis of the low-temperature phase transitions, induced by external actions in the modern advantageous materials of a reduced dimensionality, like molecular crystals, superlattices, copper and manganese oxides with the perovskite-like structures. General description of the persistent photoinduced effects in HTSC and antiferromagnets was given on the basis of two-potential relief model, irreversible giant magnetostriction in strongly-correlated superconductors was thoroughly analyzed with regard to the magnetic structures in the mixed state of superconductivitry, the similarities of a transient structures formation in superconductors and antiferromagnets was traced. The approach was developed for design of the materials for appliactions in a varied magnetic field, which gained a high esteem of the US experts (Prof.David K.Hoffman, Division Director for Science and Technology Ames Laboratory, a member for Physical Research and Technology and is operated by lowa State University for the U.S. Department of Energy.
